Resource availability drives variation in a marsupial glider’s home?range size

چکیده

Numerous studies have detailed the home-range size of a variety species. However, few been able to determine underlying contribution species' traits (e.g. body mass and diet) versus external environment resource availability) on variation in size. We investigated importance availability marsupial, savanna glider (Petaurus ariel), tropical savannas northern Australia. A strong rainfall gradient occurs over region, resulting substantial throughout geographic range P. ariel. To ariel size, we radio-tracked individuals from populations at climatic extremes species’ range, representing areas high low (mean annual rainfall: 1695 mm 1074 mm, respectively). Additionally, conducted spotlight surveys each site population density collated live-trapping data model its range. found an almost 10-fold increase ariel’s seasonal between two study (high 2.5 ha vs. 23.0 ha). Body (67.5 g 101.1 g) (1.1 ha–1 0.2 ha–1) also varied significantly populations, respectively. The mean was larger than any other similar-sized Australian Petaurid top 6% relative mass, terrestrial, omnivorous mammals globally. disproportionately large is most likely driven by within Our findings highlight that when resources are limiting, can far exceed what predicted diet alone.

Home Range Size Variation in Female Arctic Grizzly Bears Relative to Reproductive Status and Resource Availability

The area traversed in pursuit of resources defines the size of an animal's home range. For females, the home range is presumed to be a function of forage availability. However, the presence of offspring may also influence home range size due to reduced mobility, increased nutritional need, and behavioral adaptations of mothers to increase offspring survival. Here, we examine the relationship be...

Latitudinal variation in light levels drives human visual system size.

Ambient light levels influence visual system size in birds and primates. Here, we argue that the same is true for humans. Light levels, in terms of both the amount of light hitting the Earth's surface and day length, decrease with increasing latitude. We demonstrate a significant positive relationship between absolute latitude and human orbital volume, an index of eyeball size. Owing to tight s...

A New Job Scheduling in Data Grid Environment Based on Data and Computational Resource Availability

Data Grid is an infrastructure that controls huge amount of data files, and provides intensive computational resources across geographically distributed collaboration. The heterogeneity and geographic dispersion of grid resources and applications place some complex problems such as job scheduling. Most existing scheduling algorithms in Grids only focus on one kind of Grid jobs which can be data...

Individual resource limitation combined with populationwide pollen availability drives masting in the valley oak (Quercus lobata)

1. Masting, the synchronized production of variable seed crops, is widespread among woody plants, but there is no consensus about the underlying proximate mechanisms. To understand this population-level behaviour, it is necessary to dissect the behaviour of individual trees as well as the interactions that synchronize them. 2. Here, we test a model of masting in which variability in seed set is...

Resource availability, mortality, and fertility: a path analytic approach to global life-history variation.

Humans exhibit considerable diversity in timing and rate of reproduction. Life-history theory (LHT) suggests that ecological cues of resource richness and survival probabilities shape human phenotypes across populations. Populations experiencing high extrinsic mortality due to uncertainty in resources should exhibit faster life histories. Here we use a path analytic (PA) approach informed by LH...
